Research, Analysis and Advocacy

In addition to backing high impact programmes, the Foundation also supports research and analysis to shed light on the barriers facing underrepresented groups in accessing education and careers in tech.

This work will help us to identify the most effective policy and practical solutions, as well as supporting the work of others in the sector.

Generation

A global approach to understanding and tackling recruitment challenges in the tech sector for under-represented groups

The Hg Foundation is the anchor funder of a landmark research project to give global insight into hiring trends to entry level jobs in the technology sector. Developed by our partners at Generation, the study surveyed more than 4,000 employed and unemployed people, and collected 1,325 responses from tech and non-tech employers, spanning eight countries: Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, India, Mexico, the UK and the US.

The research explores critical issues such as demand for entry level talent; how job requirements are evolving; the drivers of successful applications; and how employers screen CVs and aim to increase diversity.

Education Policy Institute

Digital Skills Divided – Technical Provision for 16-19 Year Olds

The Hg Foundation has supported a new piece of analysis and research from the Education Policy Institute (EPI) considering the supply of, and demand for, technical and vocational qualifications in digital skills for 16–18-year-olds.

The research, which considers the English system, is intended to inform the future work of the Foundation and others in this space, but also to make an impact on the wider policy landscape.

The analysis explores issues such as the availability and take-up of qualifications in digital skills; the demand for qualifications amongst employers; and the capacity of further education colleges in particular to provide these qualifications.
